Drink, blow, donít go: Saab's alcohol-testing key fob

From AutoWeek

Quote:
You drink, you donít drive. At least thatís the way Saab sees itóand General Motorsí Swedish subsidiary has a way to back up that promise. An alcohol-testing key fob prototype dubbed Alcokey is being tested in Saab 9-5s in Sweden and could become available as a dealer accessory. If the fob detects too much alcohol in the driverís breath sample, it will prevent the car from starting.

Fine with me, but I could just see someone going back into the bar and saying "I need someone to help me start my car".

Also, does this check for ANY blood alcohol content (BAC) or the legal limit? Also, what about the dad that has his little kid blow into the fob.

It's a good idea, but probably not the right spot technologically for it yet.

I could see courts ordering this on all DUI offenders. Speaking of DUI offenders, what state is it that requires people with a DUI to get special drunk driver licence plates?

I know we have the special DUI plates here in Minnesota...

They are simple white plates with blue lettering, and they start with W.

Aren't they called "Party Plates"?

Yeah, I can imagine a really drunk person going back into the bar asking "Can anyone blow me? I can't start my car....."

I would worry more about WHY the kid would be with his drunk dad. And as for technologically speaking, yeah, it sounds like a nifty idea but there seems to be lots of bugs that need to be worked out.

Our courts are too easy on some DUI offenders. Repeat offenders shouldn't even be allowed to drive at all.

I wonder if you can circumvent the keyfob thing by having a whoopie cushion or something else blow air into it... they'd have to make that keyfob thing extremely deluxe to account for the creativity of drunk people.

Actually, I think the easiest solution would be if commonly drunk people didn't buy cars equipped with the device...
