What is a "minority" social group?

A'ight... I'm getting a bit confused by what exactly constitutes a "minority" to most people. Sometimes, some people toss the word around to mean anything they want - and it's pissing me off. I mean, minority could mean any group of people - but it always seems to mean "blacks and latinos" or "homosexuals."

Aren't left-handed people considered minorities as well? Why is it that the only group that gets classified as a "minority" has to be the group that is getting crapped on? How can there be a statement made about miniority ethnic groups if it always excludes Asians, Indians, and Arabs? It's not always race either. "minority" can mean the poor - even though there are a lot more poor than there are rich. Same goes with sexual preference or ethics... the minority is whatever you want it to be.

What do you guys think - is there really such a thing as a "minority?" Or is it just a word that basically means "dude, it's whatever group that I want it to mean goddamnit."

What is a "minority" social group?

Any group that is the smaller of two parts.

The real definition would be: "The smaller in number of two groups forming a whole"

What is a "minority" social group?

Yeah, but do you really believe that in your daily thoughts? I have yet to encounter a reasonably wealthy white person consider themselves to be a minority.

Really, well-off white people are now a minority group if you consider numbers in The U.S. (screw the legal census population I'm talking about sheer numbers). I'm going to guess if you consider the entire North American Continent - or even the world - white people are a definite minority.

So, is it really more of a matter of resources and desirability?

minority in speech generally means a minority (as in, lesser of 2 or more parts) but also legally protected.

left handed is not a protected class

What is a "minority" social group?

Yeah, there's the actual dictionary definition - but what about the general perception of the word?

I guess there are the "big 9" race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, disability, age and marital status discrimination groups.

But my concern is regarding the use of "minorities" to draw attention to some oppressed group - and the word minority itself becomes selective.

How many statistics have you read where they say that minorities are suffering from high unemployment - but then then must interject that their statistics only apply to a specific sub-set of ethnicities? So, does the term minority really only means the groups that need aid?

Take the University of Kansas. Some groups constantly point out the University's poor minority enrollment - but those groups purposely exclude Asians and Indians in the numbers. Including those "affluent groups" wouldn't help the blacks and latino groups from arguing their point. So why don't they just out-right say that blacks and latinos are misrepresented and quit using the word "minority?"

** EDIT ** Another example could be overweight people. 60% of Americans can be qualified as overweight. However, the stigma is that popular culture needs to stop embracing thiness since it makes the overweight "minority" feel excluded. ** END EDIT **

So, I'm not really focused on what is the syntax definition of the word - it's more about your perception of the word as you see it used daily.
