Whoever decided running Windows was a good idea

Whoever decided running Windows was a good idea in companies should be hung from a tree and beaten until dead.

Also, whoever decided outsourcing tech support to India was a good idea should be shot.

Our network access here at work has been down for 2 days because of virii. Argh! And the tech support guys don't speak english.

Whoever decided running Windows was a good idea

I work in a Jr High school, and i'm the only tech in the whole schoolboard to only have macs. Everytime there's a worm or a virus, I sit down, work as usual and watch the other techs as they're running patching systems everywhere.

Yeah... I'm a mac guy in general, but at work we use Windows (IBM), and at school we use Windows... so... I mostly end up using windows, despite generally buying macs.

Properly supported Windows with a firewall isn't a bad thing... you just have to remind people not to install BS programs like Weatherbug.

Dude, I work for IBM. If we can't manage it well, I can't imagine what smaller companies do.

I dunno - we just make sure the updates are running; strict firewalls; and we enforce some crazy mail policies.

I guess the best way to help solve things would be to switch to Linux

By the way, since you do work for IBM - I have to curse the IBM JVM... caused us nothing but grief for a couple of weeks

But that's my point - the fact htat you need to go to incredible length's just to stop your systems from bein killed by virus's and the like. There's NO reason that should be so. Hence my hatred.

I dunno... I really do think Linux and Apple would have the exact same problems if they ever became widely popular.

The moment Joe Blow starts to use Linux and doesn't run IPchains or keeps out kernel exploits, you'll have the same problems as Joe Blow who gets blasted on port 135 and falls victim to some 14 year old script kiddie.

I'd have to say that uninformed person who runs Linux will get hosed just as often as a dope on Windows. We had random people running Linux a few years ago... and they all got hacked. Whether it was through sendmail or samba - something would always happen. We ended up getting those people off Linux and onto Windows since supporting 2 crappy environments is worse than suporting 1 crappy environment. Our sysadmins still run Linux, but they spend a lot of time and effort to stay on top of the game.

But on the other hand, joe blow DOES run MacOS... and only one worm has ever penetrated it, and no damage was ever reported from it.

Anyway, just found W32.Korgo.H on my system.

My company uses a combination of Linux & Windows.

With regards to tech work going to India......you can't blame the varii for not speaking english....you have to blame the companies that outsource to India. I wonder if Americans would have a problem if their businesses outsourced to Mexico instead of India?
