speaking of game systems, anyone have a modded xbox?

i finally got around to modding my xbox this past weekend. did the gamesave exploit and installed a bigger hard drive (80gb). i'm gonna stop by the computer store after work and pick up a 250gb drive for it, then stop by blockbuster and get a game pass so i can start ripping games to the hd. there are 2 games on there now (pgr2 and shrek2(which isn't very good imo)). woohoo!

One of the best things I've ever done. Its practically the center of my entertainment center. Games, Music, Movies, and a potential 560GB  of space to store everything.

how old is you guys' xboxes? cuz I just got a brand spanking new one and after the two months free of xbox live, I plan on doing the same thing. Just windering if the install is hard and why you chose to go with the HD upgrade instead of just letting it play burned games. Any advice on future modding will also be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

i got mine right when it came out (that christmas). so it's pretty old. the newer boxes are alot more difficult to mod. i've heard that the ones out right now aren't currently able to be modded just yet. there will be new bioses out eventually. and so you know, once you mod it, you won't be able to go on xbox live anymore (atleast, not as easily). and going on there actually made it harder for me to mod mine since they update your box with code fixes and stuff.

and i went with the hd upgrade because now i can put games on my hard drive and just play them right from there. no need to change discs, or worry about scratching them. way better (and cheaper since i don't have to pay for dvd-r media this way).

I took my Xbox into a guy I knew and we dropped a 120Gb HD, the Xecutor Modchip and copied his HD which housed a slew of Atari 2600 games, SNES games, NES games, Genesis games, even N64 games with the emulators for all of them. I also have a DVD movie ripping program, all you do is pop in the DVD and hit a couple buttons and it will rip it to the HD. I have a Xbox game ripper which works the same way and I also have an Xbox version of Windows Media Edition as well. All this with an easy to use frontend to access it all. Easy as pie. I love it! I usually end up playing the old console games though, more than I play Xbox

@jcsman: We got our Xbox last christmas and the advantages to having an upgraded HD is so that you can do all the things I listed above, not to mention, when you have all your Xbox games on the HD, the games load faster and you never have to worry about losing or damaging your discs. Install is not easy, I'll tell you that (that's why I had someone else I knew do it, who has experience doing stuff like that) because there is a lot of soldering involved, so if you wanted to do it, I would search around and see if you can find a local shop to do it for you or there's always places you can find online that you can send it into.

Oh, and on an added note, if you wish to use Xbox Live, it won't work with the modchip installed, but most chips have a on/off switch so it will boot up into the Xbox frontend and run as it did out of the box. There's also a program out there that lets you use Xbox Live w/o a subscription by plugging your Xbox into your computer and running a program for it....dont recall the name of it though....

xbconnect! That was it! I had to get stuff soldered because I used a modchip which lets me boot up into a nice frontend....don't know too much about the software solution you speak of though.... what is it?

hm.... that's cool. I read that somewhere as well that the new xboxes can't be modded as well. And since I'm not so much into Live, as I just want games for cheap, the HD solution sounds like a good one. Does xbox use a normal IDE HD, or one of the new SATA ones? and where can I get more information on this topic so I don't have to keep on bothering you guys?

btw info greatly appreciated

sirius1722, the software exploit is just like the modchip. i load a new bios, get evox as the front-end and can do just about everything a modchip can (booting to burned media still isn't easy, but i think that's because i have the old version with the crappy dvd-drive).

jcsman, it uses a normal ide drive. www.xbox-scene.com is where i got most of my info.
