RAH-66 was supposed to be my other ride

I was trying to fly the RAH-66 Comanche by going through the OH-58D Kiowa transition route.... But now it is just another museum exhibit at the Army Aviation Museum. Damn cut backs.

Here are some pics of them installing the rotor blades back on. It was trucked here yesterday.

The Comanche is history. You need to invest in the V-22 Osprey, the aircraft of tomorrow:

The Comanche was a resonance helicopter. R= Recon, A= Attack, H= Helicopter... RAH-66... I don't think the V-22 Osprey would make a very good recon vehicle. The Army's plan was to only have the OH-58, which is essentially a Bell 206, for a few years before the Commanche came into service. Now we are stuck with the OH-58, even though the Delta version is a much improved over the original, it is still badly underpowered. The RAH-66 would have been a bad ass copter.

Back to the Osprey... I wouldn't want to fly that thing. The survivability would not be very good. At least I can autorotate if my engines go out on me... What are you going to do in the Osprey? You are going to drop like a rock if the engine dies while in plane mode, nothing are going to be there to produce lift. I hope they put a lot of parachutes in that thing.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. They serve different purposes. The plus side of the Osprey is it only needs a landing area the size of a tennis court. So, it can also go places where airplanes cannot. It can go further and carry more than a helo. From a commercial perspective, you can provide air transportation in new areas without the need to build an airport.

RAH-66 was supposed to be my other ride

I posted this in one random "comparo" thread a while back:

Mazda3 wins

Yeah, it was done fast - so don't complain about aspect ratio, shadows, or the forward angle of the rotors.

Hey - quick question... why the bloody hell is there a big arrow with the word "DANGER" pointing at the rear rotor? Who in their right mind assumes that a spinning rotor is "safe" until they read that it is infact, dangerous?

I suppose there should be danger signs pointing at the muntions as well?

Exactly what I was thinking... You are the one who brought up the Osprey, and I was like? HUH? The Comanche is a recon copter... why was the Osprey brought into the conversation... But I rolled with it.

Anyway, I think the Osprey will never be a success simply because it is not a safe aircraft. Like I was saying, the only thing keeping the aircraft in the air are those two engines driving the rotor system. What happens if you had even one engine go out? Not a pretty sight... Especially when it is loaded up with troops. With us rotary wing guys, we can still land safely most of the time if our engines go out. The Osprey is a coffin if anything goes wrong.

I understand where you are coming from but I would not be willing to risk my life for the sake of convience and I'm sure those corporate guys wouldn't either if they knew the risks.

My point was this: The Comanche is dead.....no more funding. The Osprey is the future. The Army and Navy are currently buying it. Plus, it will impact commercial aviation in the future. It doesn't matter if the Comanche is superior or not....its dead.
