Dude you're getting a Dell!

Seriously, good choice, I like Dell's a lot.

Dell laptops get the thumbs down from me. Their desktops are fine only cause you don't beat the shit outta a desktop.

hey, that's a cool laptop

you may or may not know, but dell has a surprisingly active owners disucssion forum:

http://forums.us.dell.com

I own 2 Dell laptops - at one time I had 3 Dells - and I've learned a lot from those forums... I'm not entirely satisfied with any of them though. I hope your laptop holds up better than mine

Hey - don't make the guy feel bad about his purchase

Zoom is right though - Dell laptops have some crappy reliability. I hope you protect your purchase from uncessary bumps, drops, shakes, cat hairs, rain, etc. As for me, I treat my hardware like crap... because I want to use these things to their fullest

As long as the screen works....

FYI, I've become very proficient in swapping hardware components from the Inspiron 8000 and 8500. Luckily, Dell sells so many of these buggers that you can find lots of cheap parts on ebay

I was considering an Alienware also, but Iím specifically looking for something portable, plus I already have my DCSE (Dell Certified System Expert), Associate Certification for Desktops, Laptops and Servers. So basically Iím certified to open my own Laptop per Dell Tech support. So Iím my own Laptop Technician

whoa - i wasn't aware that you had to be certified to work on dell hardware.

I've worked on Dell Poweredge servers, desktops and laptops... it's not like any of them are amazingly "weird" or protected... what bases does the DCSE cover?

I just wish Dell would release an official spec-sheet of certain things... like hitting [CTRL] + [ALT] + [d] during bootup to run an IDE scan... and some of the other wacky things they've done.

I also wish their bloody tech support didn't require a "reformat and reinstall" during their troubleshooting. That in itself is the most annoying roadblock you can throw at a computer user.

Last, Dell would have an option of shipping with a "No OS" option

Its just the Associate Level, nothing to hard there. We get fined if were not certified by Dell if we work on a Dell computer.

fined? who levies the fine?

Dell basically lets us swap stuff out of the Poweredge servers even though we're not certified to do so... they just overnight some parts (all too frequently if you ask me) that are clearly marked as refurbs... we swap them out, and send them the broken items. Then we cuss when another drive fails

Thank god for RAID
