Anyone else in the military.....?

Just curious to see if there are any other service members on this forum.
Im in the Navy. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns, but Im still proud to serve. I cant wait to be a civilian again so I can grow some freakin facial hair.

Any connection between my reality and yours is purely coincidental.

If I knew what a "snipe"/GSE was than I would probably be able to relate to how much you hated it.
As for hating civilian life.....DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS!

Ex Army, ASA/INSCOM from 77-81 active. Few years after in reserves.

The service is what you make it. I can't imagine I would like being stuck on a carrier like you said you were on previously.

Not to pry, but what in general do you not like?

I see you are at Ft. Rucker. Do you fly by chance?

I spent several summers of my youth in Dothan. Used to watch the helicopters all the time since it was during the height of the Vietnam war. I wanted so badly to fly copters but the recruiter joked that they didn't make bifocal canopies. That really sucked.

To this day I still wear an POW/MIA bracelet from Vietnam. The fella on it was a AH-1 Cobra pilot on his 5th tour of duty. In fact, he had been in country for 58 months (about 3 months shy of being done) which is just insane. He was shot down during the Easter Offensive of 1972 outside the city of An Loc. From what I have read it appears that his bird was the first confirmed shoot down of a helicopter by an SA-7 shoulder launched missle in Vietnam. It just sucks but he died doing what he loved. In fact, the 22nd anniversary of his shoot down is a week from today. Lastly, he was from Daleville, Alabama which you should recognize :-)

To both you n1smo and you GriefOneNYC.... Thanks for being there now. I wish I had a beer emoticon like they have over on the VWVortex forum to raise to both of you (and any other current serving members). If either of you are ever in the D.C. area, let me kow, there is a beer for you at my favourite Irish pub, on me.

A "snipe" is someone who is in engineering, which is just about the shitiest place to be in the Navy (being a deck monkey is about as bad).

GSE stands for Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Electrical) with is probably the most well trained of non-nuclear engineering rates, but just being in engineerings pretty much guarantees your getting shafted on a regular basis.

I never heard the term "snipe." Ive heard of GSE's, but I thought you may have been talking of something different. Thanks for clearing that up for me--and everyone else.

As for what I dont like about the Navy.....THE PEOPLE!! I could never get used to having 12 bosses, all holding the same position, all wanting to have things their way, and expecting me to treat them with respect when they treat me with none. There are a very, and I repeat, VERY select few folks I like working for out here. Plus livin on a humongous ship doesnt help much either. Dont let that fool any of you into thinking I am not PROUD to serve my country. I just wish more of the people were as proud as myself.

Hate to break this to you but the military ain't the only place you are going to feel the way you do now. There is almost always going to be a gaggle of bosses no matter where you go.

I know I had it pretty easy. Hell, most of the time I reported to work in civilian clothes. In fact, we were only required to where the uniform one day a week. I worked in an office most of the time with air conditioning. The folks I worked with were a combination of military and civilian. The military folks were all cream-of-the-crop grade too. I consider myself extremely lucky in case you can't tell.
