Pinging and higher octane fuel?

Basic background:
I've got an old old car that tends to get engine ping when I try to push it.
Anyways, I read in a magazine from Lordco that it's recommended that I upgrade my Octane (I'm using 87, so go to 89).

Just wondering if I should upgrade my Octane? My car IS really feeling quite powerless uphills and when I try to get it going.

Worst thing is that its an automatic, so it jumps to 4th gear when it should be 3rd (and thus MORE pinging cuz in 4th gear there's not enough power) .

Well if it's pinging then yeah higher octane should help. What octane is the car designed for?

pinging is when the car, under a stress load (example, trying to accelerate up a hill, or trying to pass another car) begins to make a "ticking" sound. That's the sound of "detontation", which is apparently bad for the engine. Pinging is a sign of misfiring and is usually a problem in older engine...
Or something like that.

MZ6ZoomZoom, the car is meant for 87.

I wouldn't describe it as "ticking". If you hear ticking, that could be your valves rapping - this won't be fixed by switching gas. Do you own an older American car by any chance?

And the prize goes to:
lmp180psu!!11
Your prize IS:

FYI, tt's a 1985 Toyota Corolla, 1.6L carburated FWD.
280,003 km on it.

And yes, it is a ticking sort of sound.
However, I switched to 89 Octane today and there was absolutely NO pinging/ticking. However, I think my car sucks up more gas with 89. So the 89 Octane does help. However...

...The car has a vibration as well as a rough idle (this has been going on for a long time), and I think that probably has something to do with the valves and/or piston or piston rings.
