PowerPC 970

Fiiiine, if I have to choose AMD or Pentium, AMD. Intel rubs me the wrong way, and the Athlon 64 is an amazing proc (one of my apt-mates just updated his system to it) especially combined with Windows 64.

AMD-it's cheaper for more processing power, from what i've seen it also outperforms comparable pentium processors.

AMD vs Pentium

I have an AMD right now. It is a 2000 or a 2200. Can't remember which one I installed. It runs 1800 Mhz. I am really pleased with it. For the money it has ran flawlessly for anything I have done with it. My motherboard is a ASUS A7V333-X with 512 MB DDR333. My hard drive is what I am most pleased with. It is a Western Digital special edition 40 GB hard drive with an 8 MB cache. That is 4 times the size of most hard drive caches out there. It is about 30 % faster then a normal hard drive (according the the salesman).

I was in the computer shop today and the sales man said the pentium is the faster of the two. But AMD will get it done and will save you money. I also read the AMD is better for gaming. I don't remember the reason they listed supporting that.

I am about to build a new computer and I am going with a P4 so I will know then if I am pleased with Pentium. I haven't owned a Pentium since the 233 was out.

The choice is pretty much up to you. But I would get the fastest one you could afford so you don't have the problem you have now in the near future.

AMD all the way!!! Pentium suxors! I remembered comparing my stock 1.4gighz overclocked @ 1.8gighz (just in Bios) with a P4 2gighz and it was close to a tie. Therefore I paid so much less and got a better video card instead of getting a pentium.

AMD vs Pentium

I'd go for the AMD64s just cause they're brand new and I'd love to try one out. In addition to the 64-bit processing they now have the memory controller onboard - basically eliminates the bottleneck from the older design.

As for Pentiums, the P4EE's don't hold a candle to the AMD64s. However, where AMD64s are tons of cash, a hyperthreaded P4C3.0 with dual channel you can't go wrong with and is well below the $300 mark. And a P4C/EE has been known to outperform standard AMD XP/Barton models at the same clock.

Final note: A 733 should be able to do anything like web surfing. If you're doing divx or mp3s, you'll need a faster processor BUT, if you're looking into gaming, you'll get more performance from an upper level video card than a new processor saddled with an old video card. IE, my 3d score went from 1500 to 5285 by going from a ATI Radeon 8500 to a 9800Pro (P4 2.2, 512MB).
