Digital Cameras

I am thinking about getting a digital camera soon as a Christmas present for myself, so I can take many pics of Mazda3's . I am looking for the best value in terms of zoom, megapixels, storage, ease of use etc. I don't have much technical expertise with electronics and need a camera that is easy to hook up/interface with my computer.

I am looking to spend not more than $200-$250 USD ( I am frugal ), and am willing to use Ebay.

What are the better brand names? What do you own? Does Sony make good cameras?

Thank You in advance for all advice!

I trust only Canons...

I used to have an S40 until someone stole it! Now I'm in the market for an S50, about $400. For $250 you may want to look into a Canon A60/A70. My mom has an A70 which performs really well. I've heard good things about Minolta's as well. I haven't heard anything bad about sony, nothing great either. I'd say that they're decent, however, I can't stand the way they layout their consumer cameras (with the lense right at the corner of the camera, waiting to be smeared by your fingers).

cnet offers some decent reviews and probably has one of the best price comparison tools around. Another good place to find camera reviews is DP Review. They can get really technical about their reviews but seem to be pretty thorough and unbiased.

I really like Sonys. I have a nice one- a DSC-P8. It takes nice hi-res pics, but wasn't overly expensive, about $400 as well, at the time.

I just got this one about a month ago:

Yeah, its a Toshiba...I didn't even know they made digital cameras....but 4.0MP and 2.8x optical zoom for $199 (what I paid) is a great deal!

Canon.

Period.

Prolly would have to look at the A series in that price range though.

Sony is pretty good at digicams. Don't know if I would trust their film cameras, IF they made any though.

This is what I tell my customers when they look for a digicam:
-What is your budget? (you have one already, good)
-3MP's is the bare minimum if you want to print letter sized prints
-Pixel count isn't everything; it's like looking at a CPU - clockspeed isn't everything since RAM and harddrive speed counts too....same goes for optical zoom, camera processor, and picture colour and representation.

Brands I trust (and have tried):
-Fujifilm (I think they have the best colour representation)
-Sony (Carl Zeiss lenses....)
-Canon (for their A-series cameras, and 300D)

This is not to say I haven't used other cameras (i.e. Kodak and Nikon), but I just think those three are the best for digital cameras. Fujifilm in general I think has great colour, not only for film, but also for digital.

Both Sony and Fujifilm makes cameras that are within your budget, so you should take a look at them. Take a look at Dpreview, as someone above had suggested. That should help you out a bit

Eh, Sony uses Zeiss lenses, but they're just cheapo versions. I don't really see that as a bonus... that's just using the name for marketing.

I would never buy a canon A series, but they are good budget cameras (I'm looking at getting an S400 in the next couple weeks).

I can honestly tell you, that the CZ lens on my camera really does kick ass. So it's not "just a marketing name".....it actually is better.
