Lens for action/sport? Sort of urgent!!!

Hi all, I have a tennis tournament coming up this weekend and I have asked my friend to help me take some pictures.

I'm planning to rent a telephoto lens for the weekend and just set the camera on auto. Because I'm more concerned about capturing the moment than to have the PERFECT exposure.

The tennis tournament will be held indoors, so I'm thinking to rent a fast telephoto lens to compensate the lack of natural sunlight. Any suggestions? If I'm thinking about this all wrong, please let me know too!

Thanks!

70-200/2.8L for versatility, if using a prime is fine you can get faster with 85/1.8(or 1.2)

That's what I'm leaning towards, the 70-200/2.8L. I'm not crazy about the fixed lens.

Good news and bad news:

Good news:
I just checked out the facility, and it's outdoor, so I don't need a stupid fast lens anymore. I'm going to use my older 80-200mm f/4.0-5.6 lens.

Bad news:
There's almost no place for spectators! There are benches in the middle of the facility, but if I'm on far courts, then there's no point for her to be there. I don't suppose she or anyone wants to be standing for several hours...

This is the lens I'll be using:

Re: Lens for action/sport? Sort of urgent!!!

It was overcast and drizzling. I apologize for the bad lighting/underexposure, but this was shot with an old-school 70-200mm 4.5-5.6. If I had a faster lens or if the sun came out, I think it would be better. In order to freeze frames I had to use a faster shutter speed. I had set the camera to Tv mode, set the shutter speed, and had my friend go at it. She's never used a dSLR before.

All of them were shot at 1/400s, again in Tv mode. I also forgot to set the ISO higher, all of them are at ISO 100. Despite the bad lighting, try to enjoy them!

I wanted to go 1/500s, but the lighting simply did not allow it. The photos are underexposed as is.

Tomorrow, hopefully the sun will come out and the photos should be better.

You could probably have adjusted the lighting a bit in post processing.
Too bad I wasn't into photography when I was playing in high school.

Where's the emotion in face?!

I have adjusted the brightness with photoshop, should I post them again?

Sorry, but I stay pretty calm when I play tennis. Sorry I can't give you crazy, beasty looking facial expression like most other tennis players:

Re: Lens for action/sport? Sort of urgent!!!

no need to have such low ISO, you aren't shooting pictures of landscapes or flowers, pump it up to 800.

For me when shooting for our Intramural sports at college my 70-200 2.8 was barely enough doing tennis even on bright days, there were a few times I swapped over to my 50 1.4 just to pump out more speed, it's hard to stop that tennis ball, at least 1/1000th gets it IIRC (maybe higher), but once the sun fell behind a building it was nearing impossible to stop it, so I finally gave up and boosted to 800 ISO and later 2400 ISO and went back to the 70-200 2.8
