Newb, Lens upgrade?

Like most of the people on here, this is not really a hobby or profession of mine, I just enjoy seeing crisp clear photos of things I take pictures of. I do not have the funds to jump on anything new at this point in time, but I may jump on something at a lesser price if its in great shape.

I have a Canon XT that I purchased used, came with a 28-90mm F4-5.6 (1:4-5.6 I assume is the same as i mentioned it?) and a quantaray (sp?) 70-300 1:4-5.6 with macro 180-300mm. I find these lenses are usable, and pretty good for me on a normal sunny day. I'm noticing though I'm having an issue with low light inside, and outside when I refuse or am unable to use flash without annoying people. I've noticed I get some blur because neither lens is an IS lens, and when I work around the blurring I see noise and it bothers me both ways.

So this had led me to believe that I need better glass from what I've read online and here, mostly need a better walk around lens. I've set my eyes on sigma for their "17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro SLD Wide Angle Zoom Lens"

Would this be a wise decision for my needs? help me gurus!

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

Thanks for the opinion, I dont think I have seen that lens in my browsing yet, probably because I honestly think the range my 28-90 covers is pretty neat.

Can ya'll explain the 1.6x crop body? are you referring to the sensor itself?

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

you said you wanted something for indoors.

the lenses you've listed are not indoor lenses.

you other option is a prime lens.

50 1.8
50 1.4
85 1.8

are all good options.

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

Alright I was scared when searching at first until I found the price was $100 for the canon 50mm f1.8, every lens I was finding until then was insanely priced lol. Perhaps I will grab one sooner than anticipated, especially since I do wind up taking a fair amount of photos indoors with the kid, and the occasional visit.

I suppose my main problem would be the fact I'm on a budget looking for something to work under a variety of needs, which is why I was looking at the lenses I posted earlier, seems like having this lens would be a great move.

Obviously I'm excluding the fact I'm a newb at photography :P

Would the lenses I was looking at before be a decent all around lens (considering price) as a step up from the 28-90mm I do have now?

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

if low light action is your main use for the 50mm 1.8, you might find you will dislike it rather quickly. it has a terrible AF for low light. if it is still images you'll learn to cope.

I'd consider a 430EX and learn how to use bounce flash. the 430 EX is capable of lighting a large room with small apertures and fast shutter speeds.

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

Well, kinda low light is where I'd use it the most. The house is lit, but I'm still either getting color noise or blur from trying to catch people in conversation or just farting around with each other.

I'll have to look into that flash, I'm just leery because not everyone is always receptive of being flashed with a bright light, I have my preferences too I'm going to take a guess bounce flash is pretty much like the name? aim at a ceiling or wall instead?

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

yes, that is correct. bounce flash, although noticeable, is a lot more pleasant than being directly flashed.

Re: Newb, Lens upgrade?

I have the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and it stays on my camera 95% of the time now. Not as fast as the 1.8 or 1/4 primes, and doesn't have any image stability, but for the price and versatility, it works well. And if there's really not enough light, I bounce flash. While the 17-70 is a nice range, the f/2.8 is only available at 18mm, which may not be an issue for you.
