Did I screw up? Nikon D3000 (pics added)

I'm new to the dslr world. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a camera with more stuff than I would ever use as a noob. I wanted a camera to learn with. Did I screw up getting this camera to learn on? Maybe I'll upgrade some day.

The pics I took of my daughter on auto turned out beautiful.

These are straight from the camera. No post processing.

My daughter Rachel

As far as if you screwed up, its all your own preference. So only you can decide that.

you didn't screw up at all - those shots came out great! You'll get a lot of use out of the camera, definitely enjoy it. As you become more comfortable with the camera you'll learn more about photography in general, trying new things and different settings to see what results they bring. Who knows, but down the road you may get upgrade fever. That's just natural - enjoy!

^^agreed

also I learned that photography is only 10% camera, 45% vision (creativity) and 45% post processing (thatís a personal opinion since I know must people that read this would completely disagree). So find a good post-processing software like Lightroom and you would see how much difference it makes to any picture. Also go to places like nikoncafe (since you have a Nikon) where there is a lot of people that would help you and will give you tips on how to really enjoy using your camera.

Re: Did I screw up? Nikon D3000 (pics added)

You almost have to do some minimal post processing with photos from a DSLR. The simplest thing is to adjust the levels or contrast.
I find most of the time the Auto Contrast option in Picasa does a pretty good job for most of my photos. Others I do more detailed adjustments in GIMP.

The photos you took came out great. They'll pop once you do some simple adjustments.

Go Nikon!
