What is wrong with my 4GB CF card?

When the computer reads it, it only has 109MB of files on there but when I put it back on the camera... it only shows that I have 18 pictures left for RAW... it's a 4gb card, it should have at least 300 like it used to be... what is wrong?

I have another card that is 2GB and it works fine.

Did you last delete photos while the card was plugged into the computer, or into the camera? And if the former, did you empty the recycle bin before disconnecting?

I deleted it when it was plugged into the computer... I used the CameraWindow to download the pictures off the card and I used that to delete the pictures, too.

Problem solved.

I just clicked properties and had it repair or something (the option above defragment) then after that, I defragmented it and now it's working like it used to be.

A good practice to get into is, instead of deleting files off of the card from your computer, format the whole card using the camera. As soon as I'm done copying photos off of my card into iPhoto, I immediately stick the card back in the camera and format it.

What do you guys mean by "format" it through the camera?

Your camera has a built-in ability to completely wipe the card and make it blank and fresh. It's better than just deleting the files off of the card, as when you delete files, it doesn't actually go through and remove the files...it just tells the card the files aren't there any more. Over time, these supposedly non-existent files can cause problems (like what you experienced). Formatting a card completely rids it of its contents so you won't have those problems.

[/quote]CF cards cannot be completely wiped clean in camera, they just zero the file allocation table and establish a new directory structure. CF cards have an internal controller that maps the bad sectors and hides them from the device using them. Unless you have special software on your PC that is specific to the very controller in that particuliar card (they are not all the same in CF cards),you are just doing a quick format. SD cards are a different story, as they have no controller and have a low level format option available in camera.
