Opinion needed: 18-55MM lens

anyone have experience with the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8? im looking for a new all around lens.
i have no experience with tamrons newer quality products so i see your opinions.
my current nikkor 18-55 vr kit lens will go back on my D60 so ill need another for my D80.

so far i have been extremely impressed with the nikkor 18-55, though it is a kit lens and
is made of plastic. its optical and build quality are quiet good. Im very use to its sharpness
so anything less would not be acceptable.

the only other lens that i have is mind is the nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 but... i cant afford it at the
moment, and that is a serious piece of equipment.

i have hard good things about sigmas equivalent to these lens, but i really really dislike the
feel of there product, as well as how they look to me.

i just dont want to end up have 2 of the same lense just because there awesome. if they had
a more professional build quality for the current 18-55 VR id get it but they do so i cant... :x

thanks in advanced.

The 18-55, while a kit lens, is actually very capable. I use it as my go-to lens for just about all of my daily shooting. I break out the 12-24/55-200 only for special purposes. I would personally not get that Tamron - a friend who had one said it was pretty soft and definitely not worth it.

I have also heard alot of mixed opinion on the tamron. either sharp or soft sharp or soft. i need to test it.

Re: Opinion needed: 18-55MM lens

That's the issue that apparently comes up a lot with third party lenses, specifically Tamrons - consistency. Some are soft, others sharp, your mileage will vary.

Anyway, the 12-24 is a Tokina f/4, not the Nikkor. Well worth the $400 I paid for it (used). Nice for fitting in wide landscape/cityscape shots, as well as for getting creative with car photography and portraiture. Definitely worth looking into. Haven't heard much about Nikon's 10-24, but another option is the Tokina 11-16.
