Camera n00b, quick question

Hello all. I don't know a whole lot about cameras or photography but I have wanted to buy myself a nice camera for a while now. I came across a possible deal locally and I'm trying to do my homework before I spend some money.

I have a few friends who are into photography but they all use Canons and can tell me nothing about Nikons since they don't use them. Does the following look like a good deal to you?

Nikon D70S

it has less than 500 clicks... comes with: targus quick release tripod, 18-55 mm auto focus stock lens, tamron 75-300 mm auto focus lens, 51-1 card reader/ writer, original box, manual, charger, battery, neck strap, macro reverse ring for stock lens to take macro photos!

500$

I joined Niknon and asked there, only one reply so far and they said to basically disregard all the extras when factoring a price and that 300-350 sounded about right for the D70s. Any other opinions?

Oh looky!

I agree, disregard the extras.

500$ can get you close to a new D5000

Also found a Canon Rebel XT for 300 shipped. Thoughts on it?

Re: Camera n00b, quick question

How many clicks on the XT? As long as it's fairly low and the body is in good shape that sounds about right. then again you can probably find an XTi for around that price, maybe a touch more--if you can get an XTi I'd say go for it.

Re: Camera n00b, quick question

Correction, XT is WAY old-school. I had one of those 4 years ago--might as well have been in the DSLR Stone Age

Re: Camera n00b, quick question

Rebel XT is still an excellent camera for entry and non entry users. XS and XSi are better obviously but and XT will still shoot a heck of a good photos, and I prefer compact flash storage cards.
