Nikon Telephoto Zoom

I'm looking to replace my Nikon 55-200 AF-S VR lens with something that is faster, and has somewhat longer range, but I'm not sure where to look. It will be something for long-range nature/portraiture shots. Here's my requirements.

- $500-600 (I could go used as well)
- Faster than my current lens (which is f/5.6 on the long end)
- Longer than my current lens (I'm thinking 300mm or longer if possible)
- Good bokeh if possible (few artifacts/halos)
- VR would be nice, but not necessary.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Re: Nikon Telephoto Zoom

Faster and longer at that price isn't going to happen unless you buy something manual focus (IE at least 15-20 years old).

Tokina made a 100-300mm f/4 manual focus zoom lens that is supposedly pretty decent and shouldn't set you back by more then about $150-200.

Other then that there isn't really much. You could go with one of the 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8 zooms, but there isn't much that goes to about 300mm these days that is faster then f/5.6 on the long end...unless you want Sigma's monster 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom (not $500-600). Your best bet might just be to get a 70-200/2.8 or f/4 and/or a 300mm f/4.

I'm not sure 15-20 years old is true. I was buying Carl Zeiss manual focus lenses right up until I switched to digital like 4 years ago. But yeah, you're in a tough spot DrNick, especially if you want to stay with brand name lenses (Nikkor).

If you go to off-brands (with a Nikon mount) they have (for $600 or less):

Sigma:
135-400mm f/4.5-5.6
70-300mm f/4.5-5.6

That's about all I could find. Neither are faster than 5.6 at the long end, but they are longer than your current one at least.

Re: Nikon Telephoto Zoom

I was refering to something in his price range and manual focus. I can't think of a Carl Ziess lens (of any focal length) that would be in his price range. Sigma, Tokina and Tamron made manual focus lenses through at least the middle '90s...but only for cameras with non-autofocus mounts (such as Olympus OM, Pentax K in some cases and a couple of others).

For faster and longer, it just isn't really going to happen.
