Monthly Photography Contest -- Planning Thread

Hey guys! How would you all like for me to host a monthly photography contest? I'll pick a topic each month and you will all have 2-3 weeks to PM me your entries. I'll talk to some of our sponsors to see if we can get some prizes going too.

On that note, if you do want to do this contest... should the photography be limited to cars? Personally, I'd prefer to leave it open to whatever interpretation you may have.

Please reply with any suggestions and comments... and please vote in the poll!

Re: Monthly Photography Contest

I think it would be cool....
but..
Here are some of my thoughts...since being involved with other forums and seeing how photo contests have turned ugly.

1) who will be judging? will it be just you? In other photo contests I have seen the judge blow off what was clearly the best entry for the mere fact that he/she just didnt like that person. Now Lara, I am in no way saying that would happen here but I have seen it happen.

2) who is the contest open to?

a) Long time registered members or the person that's just browsing through the internet and sees a photo contest with prizes and decides to register just to submit the photo to win the prize?

b)strictly amateurs or amateurs/pros?
Reason I say this is we clearly have some really talented photographers here. Those that clearly take some really award winning shots. Now just because they always can take awesome shots should they be excluded? In my opinion, no. I think it would be unfair to exclude them but then on the other hand you are going to have some people thinking, "whats the point of entering a contest if I know I have no chance of winning because those always have the best shots?"
Yes I know, there is the argument of having better competition will make you try harder and overall become better. Its just I have seen contest where the same people started winning over and over then less and less people started entering the contest.

Maybe if you had a rule like the ones you hear on the radio...those who have won in the past 30-60 days are not eligible and etc.

I hope no one thinks I am picking on them because I am not...just throwing things out there from what I have seen happen at other places.

Re: Monthly Photography Contest

Excellent suggestions and thoughts.

Well, here is what I suggest.

1.) I think the fairest and most unbiased way to judge a photography contest is to allow the public to vote. Many people have different tastes and it should not be up to a single person to decide what is best. A vote open to Mazda3Forums members would be held over the course of about a week and at the end of that week, the best will be named.

2.) I'd prefer that the contest be open to people who have been a member of our forum for more than 2 months and have over 100 posts. This would alleviate any concerns of a vagabond coming in and winning a contest. Additionally, I think that we should allow all members, regardless of their photography background to enter. If a more inexperienced member feels it is unfair... well... it is their prerogative not to enter. It would be unfair to exclude people based on their level of expertise. This is supposed to be fun--and a learning experience. I also think that all winners of the contest may not enter in the following 3 months. This would allow other people to enter and potentially win without the same individual winning each month.

How does that sound?

Re: Monthly Photography Contest

On another forum I am on, we have open contests with a theme, such as architecture, or emotions like joy, happiness etc. So everything is left up to interpretation of the person behind the camera.

the way it is judged is based on the theme and use of a picture to display that theme, so even if someone can take a insane photo, if they don't take a photo that shows the theme etc., they will lose. This has helped the amateurs participation etc. And based on the week or month, some pros will be too busy to even bother anyways, so they won't be always submitting photos as well.

I do see the point though that with people that they will not participate becuase why bother when a pro is going to kick their butt picture wise. So maybe we need to split it into two categories and have a few judges who are pros and long time members, voted there by the members who will be using this section.

eitherway i will be submitting photos whether I win or not. I could care less, but it does make it fun, it gives me camera time, and I will enjoy my time partcipating.

Also the way we ran it, is the person who won the contest, cannot enter in next months contest and they are given the job of choosing the theme and contest for the next month. this also weeds out one person for the next month, so someone isn't winning every month and gives others a chance.

So I don't know how this is going to go, but it sounds like we got a lot to hash out before we get this going....

1) I understand about people having different taste, I totally agree with that. Though opening the judging to the forum community you have the variable of people voting for entries for the sole fact that they like that person the best, not because they think they have the best photo. All the "hey, vote for my photo" pm's being sent around.

I know this all about fun and I like that and I would hope everyone would play nice....but when prizes and such get mentioned...I have seen things get nasty.

Re: Monthly Photography Contest

I say we forget prizes all together and do this for the fun of it. This way the only people who enter are the ones who want to enter to enjoy it not out to win something....

just a thought...

Well, I said earlier, I would personally prefer an open topic to allow for vast interpretation of the themes. This would bring variety into the contest and really let people get creative!

Oh definitely! All photos submitted will go through a screening process, just to ensure that they are on topic with the theme of the month.

I think we should just keep them together... once you start doing two different categories of experience level... it will start to get confusing. However I am not shutting off the possibility of utilizing this suggestion. Any thoughts people?

Oh great idea! I would love to see the winner chose the theme for the following month. Fun!

Would you rather have maybe a panel of people vote on the photos? Perhaps like 5-6 respected members of the forum with a photography background? The only catch is that the panel of judges would not be able to submit photos that month. We could do a rotation each month so there are different judges.

I'd hate to cut out the opportunity for prizes... those always provide extra incentive for those on the fence about entering the contest.

Re: Monthly Photography Contest

Sounds like fun.

But yeah, I'm with the "do it for fun crowd" or if you're going to do a prize or something, it should be something silly or a gag since it shouldn't become something that people will get hostile over.

One thing my friend's group did was that every month - the winner would get a trophy type thing - take a picture of it (sadly I think it was a hello kitty) and the following month mail it to the next winner.
