New Camera or new lens

So i've been using my nikon d40x for about 2 years now and want to upgrade to a better lens or a better camera body. I have someone who wants to buy my camera plus 18-135 lens for 550. Should i sell it and get the d90 or buy a sigma/tamron lens.

always upgrade glass before upgrading the body. Kit lens glass will always yield worse pictures than pro-level glass. I don't know much about Nikon's, but a Canon 50d will kit lens will get worse pictures than a rebel with "L" glass

Well, it is entirely up to you, but generally you will see better results with better lenses vs. a better body.

Although $550 for the camera + lens seems pretty good.

Yeah, I'm not too knowledgeable about Nikon... but to get $550 for a 2 year old camera is awesome.

Re: New Camera or new lens

I have to agree with the D40X comment, but don't upgrade to a D90. Get a D70 or D80 and spend the extra cash on glass.

I agree... get your hands on a D80 or even a D200, buy a nice VR lens and you should be content for awhile.

Re: New Camera or new lens

I was looking at the d200 but i hear it has horrible iso quality. If i upgrade to the d80/d200 which lens do yall recommend. I was thinking the tamron 28-75 or 17-55. maybe sigma 24-70?

Re: New Camera or new lens

If you want a good all-in-one lens, the Nikon 18-200 VR should be decent. I would personally go for primes, or break up that focal length range, however.
