Re: the yeys and nays about being a women

Periods most definitely suck (especially with endometriosis), as do stretchmarks after having a kid (some women are lucky and don't get them, though...all genetics). My kid also messed-up my boobs big-time...so much so that my insurance actually paid for a reduction a couple of years ago--but now I have awesome, perky boobies.

Guys also can get away with a few extra pounds, while most of us gals can't. When a guy is carrying a few extra pounds he is referred to as "stocky." We are referred to as just plain fat. Guys can also do gray hair without looking old in most cases.

But I think we get better clothing options than the guys...and we can get away with wearing funky stuff, too. We can also drive tinier cars a lot easier. Airline seats are generally comfier for us girls, too.

And no one thinks anything about a woman who is emotional, but when guys show any drastic range of emotions they are often looked at funny.

With respect to being into cars...

I hate how guys just kinda pat you on the head and tell you to "take it to the dealer" instead of teaching you anything about cars...

Just because I'm female doesn't mean I 1) can't drive 2) can't learn to change my own oil

I will, however, admit that I can't park worth shit...haha ^_^

There was that thread here about some article describing the 3 as a "woman's car." Some guy made the comment that maybe one equipped with an automatic would be. Honestly, I know FAR more women who can and do drive stick than I do men. And most of the gals I know who drive manual do a better job with it, too. And my sister and I are FAR better drivers than my brother. He just got another speeding ticket last night. I have never had one (knock on wood and thank god for cruise control) and am 3 years older than he is. His cars are also frequently dented-up because he forever backs into things.

Re: the yeys and nays about being a women

Part of the reason that I can't drive a manual yet is because no one really wanted to teach me (dad included...."just get an auto...&quot. I finally have a couple of friends who've made the offer to teach me.

Its so frustrating that guys treat us like total idiots about cars when the reason I ASKED the question in the first place is because I wanted to LEARN about the car - not be ridiculed...

Although I do have to say, recently I've found a lot of guys who think it rocks that I'm so into cars & drifting. I've made some great guy friends thanks to my obsession ^_^

Re: the yeys and nays about being a women

lol, wow, I didn't mean to be disrespectful ^_^

I'll be the first to admit - I don't know shit about maintaining my car - YET.

But I asked my dad to teach me to change my oil, and his reply was "take it to the dealer". I asked another male friend, he told me "take it to the dealer".

Okay, so I don't know how to maintain my car. I don't want to be told that I'm stupid and should take it to the dealer, if I say "how do I know if I have enough oil" then pop my hood, pull the dipstick and show me how to check it! (this is just an example, I know how to check my oil...after I made my MOM show me...).

I'm happier now that I've met a couple people who have promised to help me learn all this stuff. And I might be getting a beater car that I can help fix up and work on, which is going to help a hell of a lot. But "take it to the dealer" isn't a good answer to help us females learn about our cars ^_^

And as a disclaimer - yes, a lot of women don't give a care about their cars, and yes, not all men are condescending to women about it - I'm just saying that in general, I don't like the response I get from guys when I talk about cars.

Oh, and I don't like how our local racing event had a bikini contest...talk about derogatory...but thats another rant for another day ^_^

I think the above is a result of men having so much exposure to women that know NOTHING about an automobile past putting gas in and driving it. *I work with a few women that have NO clue about maintenance, yet when something breaks, suddenly the car is a piece of shit. *I took a ride with a 19 y.o. friend of mine in her Maxima, and on a hunch, the next time we parked somewhere, I popped the hood and checked the oil. *SURPRISE. *No oil even registered on the dipstick. *I put in 2 quarts, then raised her tire pressure from 18 to 35 and proceeded to cuss her out (in a loving, supportive way of course). *My sister was the same way with her 79 Mustang. *Oil? *Tune up? *Transmission service? *Belts? *ALL foreign concepts to her, and after 6 years of abuse and neglect, that poor car nearly gave up. *I don't automatically assume that all women are like this, but an overwhelming number of you are, so pardon us men if we assume anything.* We're a product of our surroundings. *:-)

And I could name you quite a few guys who are just like the women you know. My FIL being one of them. When they bought their first MPV van we asked if it had ABS and he didn't know. Shit, that is a pretty important feature to be aware of on a car--totally changes how a person should brake. With the exception of my husband, none of the men on either side of his family know jack about their cars (granted, neither do the women).

Yeah, well...hopefully this won't be offensive to the guys on here, but the only thing worse than a woman that is auto-ignorant is a guy that's auto-ignorant. I highly respect the women that know everything about their car and how to take care of it, where as I just automatically expect that of men.
