F/S Nikon D40 (body), SB400, Tamrac 5501, boxes and all included.

I have a camera that needs to go to someone that will use it, I hate seeing it sitting around.

I bought a D300s over a year ago and my D40 I used for work at school but I no longer have the need for two cameras anymore.

The D40 will be sold with no lenses.

I have the original box, paperwork, charger, battery, etc. No additions. (it was a "demo" piece, meaning it was touched but never used before me, thus the "reconditioned" box)
ZERO damage, it appears slightly used (dust here and there in tight placed I can't get out, and strap's fuzz is.. a bit less fuzzy than originally lol), but overall in magnificent condition.

I also have an SB400 flash. It is a very basic iTTL flash that allows you to bounce the flash off of ceilings and other locations, great flash, takes 2AAs. Shows MINOR blemishes on the text on the underside, just fingernail scratches from putting it on and pulling it off of camera. Comes with its original case and box.

Also I have a Tamrac 5501 which is a small messenger bag great for a smaller body w/ lens, a second lens and a flash. You can also purchase saddles for the side to attach another lens or flash or what have you. It shows zero damage.

If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask!

Nikon D40......... $220 + shipping (that's a steal by the way, I really want someone to take this camera from me who needs it)
Nikon SB400 .... $90 + shipping
Tamrac bag...... $30 + shipping

If you buy all 3 I'll send the bag free.

Prices are CONUS, OBO.
So let me know!

For the sake of reference, this is what a flash that can bounce off the ceiling take pictures from.. to.

Re: F/S Nikon D40 (body), SB400, Tamrac 5501, boxes and all included.

Prime would be get a 50mm, you can also get one of those 35mm lenses which replicates a true 50mm on a dSLR.

for a while I used a very old 1970s 50mm lens on it that I had bought for $20, worked excellent. I had no metering or anything, but it's a digital camera... after a while my brain could get pretty close to metering, otherwise, just delete it and take another!

Honestly though just get the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm for a telephoto. They are super cheap lenses, both are very sharp, unfortunately I sold my 55-200 VR to a fellow student, and my 18-55mm I still use actually quite a bit.

But seriously, I highly recommend getting some old AF lenses, you can buy some super cheap on Adorama.com used, (AIs do work without metering, pre AI does not fit the body at all however, so beware of that). Also be aware that the D40 model has no motor in it, so if you want lenses that do autofocus it has to be an AF-S lens.

Otherwise it supports and lens or equipment from back in the 70s, metering may not work, but like I said after you play with it enough you can almost figure it out on your own.

But yeah, 50mm 1.8 or faster is a must, you can get them stupid cheap.
My only other prime I had was a 135mm 2.8 which was also an AI lens. Was a bit long for doing head shots, but still very good for nature shots of flowers etc. since it was so fast.

Personally though, if you want to go all prime, get a 24mm, 50mm, and an 85mm, those are the best. Can't go wrong with those at all.

not set on a prime lens, theyre usually just cheaper and easier to use lol. but i did see a 18-55 and 18-70 for a really good price. also, do you know if the flashes are brand specific, or can a canon 430 flash be used on these cameras? only asking because my gf has a canon and plans on getting more so i wouldnt really have a use for one. if not i will probably get the flash along with.

no, flashes cannot be used across systems because of the hot shoe pins being in different locations.
