here's my situation i bought an 06 3 gt 2.3l with a blown motor swapped an 04-05 engine in thinking it was the same... now heres my problem the car starts fine engine sounds great it just doesn't stay running for more then 10-15 secs... cel came on giving me a p0340 or cam position sensor circuit. i checked all my grounds and connections look good even added a couple more ground wires. so after lots of research i found out that the intake cam has 5 positions on the 04-05 engine and 6 on the 06-09 now on to my question besides swapping cams can i use the 04-05 ecu to fix this problem??

I seem to remember reading a.thread up.here about someone doing the reverse - replacing the ECU with a diffrent year ECU - basically what u are doing.. If I remember correctly, unless u get exactly the same year and revision combination of engine and ECU the ECU needed to be reflashed and the pinouts had to be modified - so in short yes switching the ECU ( or a reflash of existing ) and reworking the harness may do the trick, you may also have to replace a few sensors as well... The AFR sensor comes to mind as I believe Mazda changed the type used from the 05 to 06 models

You need an 06+ intake cam. The teeth on the driver's side of the cam are different profiles between 04/05 and 06+.

It isn't too difficult to swap out the cam.

Align cams per manual
Loosen timing chain
Unbolt cam per shop manual (iirc, 25% outside to inside, 50% outside to inside, 100% out to in)
Remove intake cam gear from cam
Install gear on new cam
Bolt cam in place per shop manual (iirc, reverse of above)
Realign intake cam
Reinstall chain
...
Profit
